Sids and Kids Sunshine Beach Run - Sunday 16th March - Register now!

With exactly two months to go until the run on Sunday, March 16 at City Beach, now is the time to sign up at www.sunshinebeachrun.com.au and start your fundraising page for this fantastic cause.

The Sunshine Beach Run was founded by West Coast Eagles / Body Logic physiotherapist Chris Perkins in 2012, after the tragic loss of his stillborn baby son Jake, and his wife Cindy just a week later.

The run is dedicated to anyone who has been affected by the loss of a child, and raises much-needed funds for SIDS and Kids WA. By supporting the third annual Sunshine Beach Run, you can directly help WA families grappling with the unexpected loss of a baby or child. All funds raised will support SIDS and Kids new Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby campaign, which is set to be launched in 2014 throughout Western Australia.

The Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby campaign focuses on the overwhelming (but little publicised) statistics that one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage or stillbirth. In 2010 alone, 218 babies were stillborn in WA – a startlingly similar figure to the number of WA women who die due to breast cancer every year. In particular, the stillbirth rate among Indigenous Australians is double that of non-Indigenous Australians. Through the Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby campaign, SKWA wants to bring stillbirth prevention to the forefront of the national health agenda in 2014.

Through the program, SIDS and Kids WA will:

  • Raise awareness of the risk factors
  • Research ways in which to reduce the risks further
  • Provide information to women about early detection
  • Address health inequalities facing Indigenous Australians
  • Provide culturally-appropriate and tailored information to “high risk” populations, and
  • Implement bereavement care linking the hospital to the community

Covering topics as diverse as nutrition and physical activity, antenatal care, foetal wellbeing, parenting workshops, grandparent information, safe sleeping recommendations and CPR, as well as providing bereavement support, the Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby campaign is how we can help save babies’ lives.

On Thursday 24th October - Sunday 27th October Dr Richard Yin and a group from the meditation classes at Yoga Moves will be walking from Glen Mervyn Dam, south of Collie, to Origins Centre in Balingup.
